Rim Depth: Balancing Aerodynamics and Weight

Rim depth is often the first specification considered when defining a new wheel product. For wheel brands, rim depth directly influences:

(1) aerodynamic performance
(2) wheel weight
(3) stiffness and ride feel
(4) product positioning

Because the market contains many similar rim depths, choosing the right depth is not only a technical decision but also a product strategy decision. Below are the typical applications of different road rim depths.

Deep-section rims are designed for riders prioritizing aerodynamic efficiency and high-speed performance. Advantages:improved aerodynamic performance at higher speedsincreased lateral stiffness and responsive accelerationsharper handling during fast cornering

The main trade-off is weight. For example, with the same rim width and structure, increasing rim depth from 50mm to 60mm typically adds around 15–20g per rim.

Deep rims can also transmit more road vibration due to their higher stiffness. However, this can be balanced through wider tires, lower tire pressure, and optimized carbon layup.

Recommended for:
(1) aero road bikes
(2) racing-oriented wheelsets
(3) riders frequently riding at high speeds

Rim Width: Tire Compatibility Comes First

When selecting rim width, the first consideration should always be the target tire size. The following recommendations are based on common road applications.

25C–28C Tire Fit

A 21mm internal width rim is suitable for lightweight racing applications where 25C or 28C tires are preferred.
