Carbon Road Rim Selection Guide for Wheel Brands

Introduction: More Than Choosing a Rim

Open-mold carbon rims provide wheel brands and custom wheel builders with a fast and reliable way to develop competitive products. Unlike completely new rim development, open-mold solutions offer:

(1) proven structural performance
(2) validated production processes
(3) lower development costs
(4) shorter time to market

Brands can start with sample wheelsets for testing, market validation, or direct sales through their online and offline channels.

At NTP, our open-mold products are developed based on market research, rider trends, and feedback from wheel brands. This allows us to create products with clearer market positioning rather than simply adding another rim model to the market. For brands looking for stronger differentiation, our open-mold platforms also support customization options, including graphics, specifications, and selected structural adjustments.

This guide explains how to choose the right carbon road rim based on key factors such as rim depth, width, and intended application.

Rim Depth: Balancing Aerodynamics and Weight

Rim depth is often the first specification considered when defining a new wheel product. For wheel brands, rim depth directly influences:

(1) aerodynamic performance
(2) wheel weight
(3) stiffness and ride feel
(4) product positioning

Because the market contains many similar rim depths, choosing the right depth is not only a technical decision but also a product strategy decision. Below are the typical applications of different road rim depths.
Sprinting & Aero Racing All-Round Lightweight Climbing

Sprinting & Aero Racing
Deep-section rims are designed for riders prioritizing aerodynamic efficiency and high-speed performance. Advantages:improved aerodynamic performance at higher speedsincreased lateral stiffness and responsive accelerationsharper handling during fast cornering

The main trade-off is weight. For example, with the same rim width and structure, increasing rim depth from 50mm to 60mm typically adds around 15–20g per rim.

Deep rims can also transmit more road vibration due to their higher stiffness. However, this can be balanced through wider tires, lower tire pressure, and optimized carbon layup.

Recommended for:
(1) aero road bikes
(2) racing-oriented wheelsets
(3) riders frequently riding at high speeds

Rim Width: Tire Compatibility Comes First

When selecting rim width, the first consideration should always be the target tire size. The following recommendations are based on common road applications.
25C–28C Tires 28C–30C Tires 32C+ Tires
21mm Inner Width
25C–28C Tire Fit
A 21mm internal width rim is suitable for lightweight racing applications where 25C or 28C tires are preferred.

Advantages:
(1) lower system weight
(2) optimized aerodynamic profile with narrower tires

Recommended for:
(1) climbing wheels
(2) lightweight road racing wheels

R21-50: 21mm IW, 26.4mm OW, 50mm Depth, 375g±15

After Selecting the Rim: Defining the Complete Wheel System

Choosing the rim is only the first step of wheel development. Once the rim model is selected, brands should define the following specifications.

1. Rim specifications

Key factors include:
Different weight versions allow brands to target different customer groups:
a. lightweight racing products
b. balanced all-round products
c. reinforced high-durability products
Important considerations include:
a. spoke count
b. internal or external nipples
c. valve hole design
d. drainage hole design
Special applications may require customized drilling programs, such as: uncommon spoke counts, carbon spoke systems, and 2:1 spoke patterns.
Customization options include:carbon weave, surface finish, logo design and other graphics.

2. Complete wheel development support

Beyond carbon rims, NTP supports complete wheel development, including:
(1) hub selection
(2) spoke and nipple matching
(3) wheel building recommendations

Clients can choose:
(1) complete wheel assembly by NTP
(2) rim and component supply for local wheel building

Through partnerships with reliable component suppliers, we provide customized solutions based on each brand's product positioning.
