Super-Light Product Offering: Sub-220g Road Hubset for a Sub-1kg Wheel Build

Introduction
Building a sub-1 kg road wheelset requires more than selecting an ultra-light rim. Every component — from the rim and hub to the spokes and nipples — contributes to the final system weight. To give wheel brands more flexibility when developing super-light road wheelsets, NTP offers a sub-220 g road hubset from our hub manufacturing partner.
Details
Available in configurations for both carbon spokes and steel spokes, the hubset combines low weight with a patented ratchet system and different spoke configurations for different wheel-building approaches.

Sub-220 g Hubset With a Performance-Focused Design

The hubset weighs just:
  • 218 g for the carbon-spoke version
  • 216 g for the steel-spoke version

Despite its low weight, the hubset incorporates several design features focused on reliable power transmission and durability.

Patented Tapered 30T Ratchet System

The hub uses a patented tapered 30T ratchet system designed to increase the engagement area between the ratchet components while reducing the risk of slipping during power transmission. For an ultra-light road wheelset, this provides a balance between low weight and dependable drivetrain engagement.

Special Ratchet Coating

The ratchet receives a special surface coating designed to increase hardness and reduce friction. This treatment helps improve the durability of the engagement components while supporting smooth ratchet operation.

Two Configurations for Different Wheel Builds

A key feature of this hubset is the availability of two spoke configurations, allowing wheel brands to choose a platform according to their preferred spoke technology.

What Should Wheel Brands Consider Before Choosing a Super-Light Hub?

A lightweight hub can help reduce wheelset weight, but lighter is not automatically better. The hub needs to be appropriate for the complete wheel system and its intended use.

Bearing System

Bearing quality, preload and durability should also be considered when evaluating a lightweight hub. Weight reduction should not be viewed separately from the hub's intended performance.

The SL hubset uses:
  • Front: 6803 + 6802
  • Rear: 6803 + 15267 + 6802

Freehub Body Design & Durability

Weight optimization also extends to the freehub body. Material is removed from selected areas to reduce weight, but this can result in lower resistance to wear and deformation compared with a heavier construction, particularly under aggressive riding conditions.

For this reason, the hubset is intended for lightweight road applications rather than demanding, high-load use.

Spoke Count and Wheel Structure

A low-spoke-count build can help reduce system weight, but it also places greater importance on spoke selection, lacing pattern and rim stiffness.

The hub configuration should therefore be considered together with the selected rim and spoke system to achieve the desired balance of weight, stiffness and ride feel.

Intended Rider and Application

This hubset is designed for lightweight road wheel applications with a maximum system weight of 80 kg, including the bike and rider.

It is therefore better suited to lightweight, performance-oriented applications than to high-system-weight or heavily loaded riding.

Wheel brands should take this limit into account when defining the target rider and positioning the finished wheelset.

Develop Your Lightweight Wheel System With NTP

The development of an ultra-light wheelset should start with the complete wheel system, rather than optimizing individual components in isolation.

The hub is only one part of the weight and performance equation. Rim weight, spoke technology, spoke count, lacing pattern and the intended rider all need to work together. NTP can help wheel brands evaluate suitable carbon rims and component configurations according to their target weight, spoke technology and intended application.
